Openfiler. Does ISCSI. I havent had a chance to build mine yet but i am excited about the possibilities.
Another option is to replace your router with one you can hang a USB drive off of. You get what you pay for on this as not all routers are created equal.

| Just got the hardware for a HomeNAS. I started with ubuntu and ebox on top, but I've quickly moved to FreeNAS. It has made some big leaps, now supporting both target and initiator for iSCSI.

I just looked at this. Looks interesting, but my only concern is this magic black box that has some magic fairy dust that protects my data. That would put me a little on edge to buy it. But other than that it looks like a cool system. And it's got a very decent price point.

Well, so does other RAID It just does a better job at the allocation. The speed is pretty good too. So, with other RAID, if your controller dies then so does the data. Think of the drobo as the controller. At least, that's my perspective.

I guess you have a point. I haven't really done much in the way of fooling with hardware RAID-5. Most of my experience is with software mode RAID. Like I was saying about price point. It's nice, but I was able to get my system down to 250, and I had some drives. It fit my needs. hehe
